Spanish Grunt (Haemulon macrostomum)

Synonyms: Diabasis lateralis, Haemulon crysopterum, Haemulon macrostoma, Haemulon mowbrayi

 

Haemulon macrostomum occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean in Bermuda, Florida, throughout and the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea; also in the Gulf of Mexico. It is usually found near coral reefs at depths 5-25 m. Adults are silvery grey with yellowish back and alternating thick and thin black lateral stripes; dorsal and pectoral fins are yellowish. Length is 25-43 cm; weight up to 850 g. Spanish Grunt feeds on marine invertebrates, including crustaceans, sea urchins, etc. Rarely forms schools.
